  • Will serve 15 years of probation.
  • Prohibited from leaving the Atlanta area.

Atlanta rap star Young Thug avoided prison last Thursday by changing his plea to guilty in the longest criminal trial in Georgia’s recent history.

This unexpected twist brought a surprising end to a process that has kept the attention of legal observers for nearly two years.

Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, was facing multiple serious charges related to drugs, weapons, and street gang conspiracy.

By pleading guilty, the rapper could have faced a considerably long prison sentence, but Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker decided to commute his sentence.

Initially, Whitaker had considered a 40-year prison sentence, which would have required Young Thug to serve at least five years behind bars.

However, the judge’s decision granted him probation, an outcome that left many surprised, considering the seriousness of the charges.

Judge Whitaker also imposed additional restrictions on Young Thug, who must serve 15 years of probation under strict supervision.

Among the conditions he must follow, the rapper is prohibited from leaving the Atlanta metropolitan area and is barred from any contact with gang-affiliated members.

Additionally, Young Thug will be required to perform community service, including presentations to the community and talks for young people about the dangers of gang violence.

Negotiating this guilty plea had its challenges, as it initially seemed the parties would not reach a concrete agreement.

Judge Whitaker questioned Young Thug on whether he would accept a plea without negotiation, leaving the rapper’s fate up to the court without intervention from the prosecution or his defense in sentencing.

After a short recess, Young Thug and his legal team returned to the stand and accepted the guilty plea terms on drug and weapon charges, while the rapper did not contest the accusations of conspiracy and association with a gang.

“You better not have any violations, but if you do, you’ll see me again,” said the judge, according to NBC News

Before sentencing, Young Thug told the court that he takes «full responsibility for my crimes and charges.» He said he now recognizes the influence he has in his South Atlanta neighborhood to set a better example.

“I know what I can bring and I know who I am,” Young Thug affirmed. “I know what I’ve achieved and the impact I’ve had on people in the community.”

Young Thug, 33, has been incarcerated since his arrest in May 2022 on charges related to leading an alleged street gang, Young Slime Life, or YSL.
