Leaders of labor and civil rights groups warned this Tuesday about the implementation of the ‘2025 Project’.

A government program crafted by ultraconservative groups that they believe would be «catastrophic» for Hispanic workers.

They argue it would strip them of their rights and expose them to «exploitation».

The project proposes concentrating powers in the president, dismantling various federal government agencies, firing thousands of public officials, reducing protections for child laborers, and banning unions, among other changes.

David Huerta, president of the SEIU-USWW union, warned in a press teleconference that this initiative:

«Endangers the progress of workers and unions» and exposes Latinos to «exploitation and marginalization».

The union leader pointed out that Latinos have endured decades of discrimination in the labor market, pushing them to:

«The shadows of our economy,» he said, accepting low-wage jobs without protection.

What is Project 2025 about?

A situation that ‘Project 2025’ promotes with policies advocating for the prohibition of public employee unions.

And undermining the oversight rule of the National Labor Relations Board, denounced the SEIU activist, the largest national union of workers and immigrant workers.

It is a program that not only allows employers to avoid paying workers overtime compensation for hours worked.

But also responds to an «extreme» agenda that «primarily benefits wealthy corporations,» Huerta said.

What does the project propose?

The ‘Project 2025’, driven by the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank, proposes a roadmap for a radical change in the US administration.

In the event that former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) wins the elections next November 5, although the Republican has distanced himself from the plan.

The project proposes banning the abortion pill mifepristone in the country, cutting environmental defense policies.

In addition to restarting the construction of the border wall with Mexico and carrying out mass deportations of migrants, something Trump himself advocates at his rallies.

An aggression against Hispanics?

Yadira Sánchez, director of Poder Latinx, said in the teleconference that this initiative only seeks to «dismantle critical environmental protections and undermine hard-won progress in recent years».

For Sánchez, this initiative is above all a «regression» because it minimizes the urgency of addressing climate change by making it a secondary concern.

While pushing policies that favor the fossil fuel industry «under the guise of economic development».

The Project 2025 agenda, Sánchez emphasized, directly contradicts Latinx Power’s efforts to «promote clean air and water and better health for all,» especially for Latinos.
