Macron, who was the youngest president in France when he was elected in 2017, plans to work closely with Gabriel Attal.

The president will appoint a new government in the coming days, although it is expected that some key ministers will remain in their positions.

The 46-year-old president has shifted to the right on immigration and security issues since taking office.

This is partially in response to his far-right rival Marine Le Pen and her National Rally party, which opposes immigration and Islam.
