Powerful aftershocks in Taiwan
Taiwan was rocked by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to The Associated Press.
The earthquake, which occurred at 02:26 local time, marked the latest in a series of tremors recorded in the region since Monday afternoon.
Eyewitness reports claim buildings swayed, and people shared videos documenting their experiences on social media.
So far, no significant damages have been reported.
Where did the earthquake occur?
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Hualien, on the eastern part of the island, with a depth of 5.5 kilometers, according to Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring system.
Despite the intensity of the quake, no tsunami alert was issued by local authorities who are assessing the situation.
This shake-up occurred as part of a series of tremors that began on Monday afternoon.
The strongest of these was a magnitude 5.9 quake, also centered in Hualien, according to data from the Central Weather Agency.
When will the aftershocks in Taiwan stop?
The first tremor of the day, a magnitude 5.5, was recorded at 17:08, and its impact was even felt in the capital, Taipei.
Throughout the evening and night, several aftershocks occurred, with the most significant shaking reported around 22:15 (local time).
Taiwan authorities have been closely monitoring the situation, with Hualien’s fire service deploying teams to assess any potential damage.
This latest earthquake adds to a series of quakes that have hit Taiwan since April 3.
What do experts say?
The April 3 earthquake was reported to be a magnitude 7.4 event that struck the island, leaving at least 17 dead and more than 1,100 injured.
The epicenter of that earthquake was also located in Hualien, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to such natural disasters.
Authorities urge the public to remain calm and to follow recommended safety precautions in the event of earthquakes.
These including seeking shelter in safe areas and staying informed through official sources. To see a video of the aftershocks in Taiwan click HERE.
