- Possible release of Yolanda Saldívar, murderer of Selena.
- Reported by EFE.
- Here are the details.
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles confirmed this Monday that it is evaluating the early release of Yolanda Saldívar, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of iconic singer Selena Quintanilla in 1995.
Sources from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice indicated that Saldívar, who has spent nearly 30 years in prison, will have her first opportunity to apply for parole on March 30, and that her case «is under review.»
However, they warn that this type of process usually takes about six months.
Amid this process, Saldívar’s family recently assured that she «is repentant» and, for the first time, would be admitting her guilt for the crime.

For years, Saldívar maintained that the shooting was accidental, but now her family revealed to the New York Post that she has acknowledged that the gunshot was intentional, which legal experts interpret as a possible strategy before the Board.
For their part, the Quintanillas, led by Abraham Quintanilla, the artist’s father, strongly oppose the release of the inmate.
«No repentance can bring Selena back to us,» he expressed.
Saldívar, 63, is serving her sentence at the Mountain View women’s prison in Gatesville.

The crime occurred on March 31, 1995, at a motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, when the singer met with Saldívar to retrieve financial documents after discovering irregularities in her management as president of her fan club.
The meeting became tense, and when Selena tried to leave, Saldívar pulled out a revolver and shot her in the back. The artist managed to seek help but died minutes later in a hospital.
Meanwhile, Selena’s followers have expressed their rejection on social media at the possibility of Saldívar obtaining parole, promoting campaigns for authorities to deny her request.
The Texas Parole Board will take into account factors such as Saldívar’s prison behavior, the impact of the crime on the community, and her willingness to reintegrate into society.
However, criminal law experts consider that, due to the severity of the case and media pressure, the chances of Saldívar being released are low.
