The College of Cardinals elected Augustinian Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, from Boston, United States, as the new Supreme Pontiff.
Cardinal Prevost will henceforth be known as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the 267th successor to the Apostle Saint Peter.
Thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square erupted into applause when they saw the white smoke rise from the chimney at the Vatican.
