The so-called Prophecy of the Popes describes, through short mottos, a succession of pontiffs from the 12th century to a final spiritual leader known as «Peter the Roman.»

This figure, according to the text, would guide the Church through a time of tribulation, culminating in the destruction of Rome and the final judgment.

According to believers of the prophecy, Pope Francis corresponds to motto number 111.

His successor, therefore, would be “Peter the Roman,” the 112th and final name on the list.

Historians assert that the text first appeared in the 16th century, long after the death of Saint Malachy in 1148, and was likely created for political purposes to influence a conclave at the time.
