The death of Pope Francis, which occurred this Monday at the age of 88, has sent shockwaves throughout the Catholic world.
As the Church prepares for his funeral rites and the upcoming conclave to elect his successor, an old and controversial prophecy has resurfaced: the Prophecy of Saint Malachy.
Francis, who passed away at the Casa Santa Marta residence after months of respiratory complications, has been identified by some as the 111th pope in a prophetic list attributed to the Irish monk Saint Malachy.
According to this interpretation, the next pope would be the last before the final judgment.
Who is “Peter the Roman”?

The so-called Prophecy of the Popes describes, through short mottos, a succession of pontiffs from the 12th century to a final spiritual leader known as «Peter the Roman.»
This figure, according to the text, would guide the Church through a time of tribulation, culminating in the destruction of Rome and the final judgment.
According to believers of the prophecy, Pope Francis corresponds to motto number 111.
His successor, therefore, would be “Peter the Roman,” the 112th and final name on the list.
Church and Experts Reject the Prophecy
After the death of Pope Francis, a forgotten prophecy resurfaces:
Nostradamus and Saint Malachy predicted the arrival of the «Black Pope,» the last before the end…

However, the Catholic Church has repeatedly dismissed the authenticity of this prophecy.
Historians assert that the text first appeared in the 16th century, long after the death of Saint Malachy in 1148, and was likely created for political purposes to influence a conclave at the time.
Even so, following Francis’s death, social media and certain religious circles have revived the prophecy’s message.
Fueling debates about whether the world is now entering an era foretold as apocalyptic.

With the Apostolic See now vacant, the Vatican is preparing for the conclave that will, in the coming days, gather cardinals from around the world to elect the new leader of the Church.
Meanwhile, speculation surrounding the future pope and his possible connection to the figure of “Peter the Roman” continues to grow.
Beyond personal beliefs or interpretations, the death of Francis marks a pivotal moment in recent Catholic history, opening a new chapter filled with spiritual, political, and societal questions.
