A pro-Palestinian demonstration at Columbia University culminated in dramatic fashion when the New York City police took action.

Responding to a request for help from the university, they entered the campus to evict protesters who had occupied a building for approximately 20 hours.

The protestors demanded that the university cease its business ties with Israel or companies that support the war in Gaza.

The police presence sparked confrontations and the arrest of dozens of people, according to a statement from the University.

At UCLA there were clashes between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups early Wednesday morning.

The violence escalated with pushing, hitting and even the use of sticks, before riot police intervened in the situation.

“Horrific acts of violence occurred at the encampment tonight, and we immediately called law enforcement for mutual aid support,” said Mary Osako, a prominent UCLA official.

According to The Associated Press, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass spoke with the university president and said police would respond to the school’s request.

The AP noted that the clashes occurred right in front of the camp.

Pro-Palestinian protesters had set up barricades and plywood boards for protection, and counter protesters tried to tear them down.

Security had been tightened on campus on Tuesday after authorities reported “physical altercations” between factions of protesters.

Police have intervened on other college campuses in the United States over the last two weeks, which has led to confrontations and more than 1,000 arrests.

These incidents reflect the polarization and intensity of positions regarding the conflict in the Middle East.

While some students expressed their disagreement with the police intervention, arguing that it was an unnecessary escalation, others considered it necessary to maintain order on campus.

In the national context, student protests against the Israeli offensive in Gaza have been a cause of concern and debate.

Some leaders have condemned the protesters’ actions, while others have expressed support for the Palestinian cause and called for divestment from Israel in certain areas.

President Biden has criticized the occupation of academic buildings as an “absolutely flawed strategy,” according to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.

Meanwhile figures such as former President Donald Trump have supported police intervention in these events, according to The Associated Press.

Universities face the challenge of balancing freedom of expression with the security and normal functioning of their academic activities.

The ability to dialogue and find peaceful solutions in the midst of polarized positions is essential for the educational environment and respect for the rights of all those involved.
