Five people tragically lost their lives when a small plane crashed during takeoff on Santa Catalina Island, off the southern coast of California, authorities reported Wednesday.

The crash involved a twin-engine Beechcraft 95 aircraft, which went down shortly after taking off from Catalina Airport, near Avalon, around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to the FAA, five people were on board the aircraft, all of whom were found dead at the crash site.

The wreckage was located in a rugged area approximately 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) west of the airport, detailed the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Emergency response was activated after the Avalon Sheriff’s Station received a 911 emergency call from a cellphone, authorities said.

“The cellphone indicated that the user’s device had been involved in a collision with possible injuries. It provided a location using GPS coordinates,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement.

Santa Catalina Airport is known as the «Airport in the Sky» due to its location at an elevation of 1,602 feet (488 meters) on the island.

It is located approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the coast of Los Angeles. It has a single 3,000-foot (914-meter) runway, according to The Associated Press.

Santa Catalina, home to around 4,000 permanent residents, is a popular destination for mainland tourists who visit to enjoy activities such as snorkeling, boating, hiking, and the charm of Avalon, its picturesque coastal town.

Authorities continue working to clarify the exact details of the tragic event, while the local community and investigators prepare to address the potential causes that led to the fatal plane crash.
