Pam Bondi blocks funding to sanctuary cities

  • Department of Justice will pause financing to NGO migrants.
  • Democrats question Bondi’s independence.

Pam Bondi confirmed as the United States Attorney General and made one of her first decisions: to cut the federal financing to the Sanctuary cities.

The order was issued through a memorandum in which the Department of Justice is instructed to stop the funds for these jurisdictions.

«The department will exercise its authority to impose any condition to obtain funds that do not violate constitutional limitations,» says the document.

The deputy attorney general will have 30 days to inform Bondi about the subsidies affected by this measure.

In addition, the Department of Justice will not grant new contracts or subsidies to non -governmental organizations that support or provide services to undocumented migrants.

The memorandum establishes a 60 -day break in the distribution of funds to these organizations while new actions are evaluated.

It is not the first time that a Republican Attorney tries to restrict these funds.

During the administration of Donald Trump, the then Attorney General Jeff Sessions tried to block subsidies to sanctuary cities.

That attempt unleashed multiple demands in the Federal Courts, with divided failures on the legality of the measure.

In Chicago, an appeal court ruled that the restriction violated the authority of Congress.

However, another Court of Appeals in New York considered that the policy of the Department of Justice met the legal requirements.

Bondi also ordered to stop any subsidy or contract of the Department of Justice to organizations that provide services to undocumented migrants.

In the Memorandum, the Attorney General points out that the Department of Justice must take actions against cities and sanctuary states.

«State and local jurisdictions must comply with federal immigration laws,» says the document.

The Department of Justice will also review the financing agreements with organizations that provide support to immigrants in an irregular situation.

If any breach is detected, the funds will be stopped and recovery procedures could be initiated.

This order is one of the 14 directives signed by Bondi in an attempt to reverse policies of the Biden administration.

The decision has generated controversy and questions by the Democrats.

Some legislators fear that Bondi acts under the influence of Trump, with whom he maintains a close relationship.

During his confirmation hearing in the Senate, Bondi denied that his work in the Department of Justice is motivated by political reasons.

However, he has defended Trump’s accusations that the Department of Justice has been used as a political weapon.

Bondi swore his position in the Oval Office, in the presence of Trump and the Judge of the Supreme Court Clarence Thomas.

It is the first time that Trump attends an official of his cabinet in his second term.

His presence underlines the interest of the former president in the functioning of the Department of Justice.

This same department was the one who investigated him during his first term and accused him after leaving office in 2021.

Bondi’s decision marks a radical turn in the immigration policies of the Department of Justice and anticipates new legal disputes.
