If there is one thing that stands out in the lives of drug lords, both in Colombia and other countries, it is the lavish parties and celebrations they organize for their colleagues. Pablo Escobar was no exception as he was the center of the large gatherings financed with illegal money.

Many times, singers ended up being invited to these gatherings, not knowing who they were performing for. And most were well-known celebrities who stood out for their successful careers and talent.

Over the years, stories have come to light of a series of parties in which the Colombian drug lord was present, especially since Escobar sparked such fear that he left his mark on those around him and remains in their memories. Such is the case of Spanish singer-songwriter José Luis Perales, now 76 years old.

It is said that the romantic singer is supposedly one of the celebrities who, when he performed at a special event for which he had ben hired, wound up involved in a Colombian drug trafficker’s party. The story goes that Pablo Escobar apparently forced him to perform the same song more than 15 times.

This story was not told by the artist himself. Pablo Carbonell, the leader of Los Toreros Muertos, included the anecdote in his book: El mundo de la tarántula. According to the Argentine newspaper, Clarin, he said the following:

“I heard that José Luis Perales was at a drug party and had to sing ‘¿Y cómo es él?’ fifteen times. At first they gave him a thousand dollars each time, but when he had already sung it about ten times he refused to repeat it. They put a gun on the table and he had to play the song as many times as the party organizer or the lady who was accompanying him wanted.

According to El Heraldo, José Luis Perales was contacted by Jorge Luis, Fabio and Juan David as well as the Ochoa brothers, associates of Pablo Escobar and therefore important members of the Medellin Cartel. He was hired to attend the birthday event of a veteran of the criminal gang.

Another of the details that Pablo Carbonell revealed was that the artist said that he had been told at one of his own concerts in Colombia, that Perales was offered up to one thousand dollars for each time he sang the famous song.

According to Clarin, José «Berry» Navarro, José Luis Perales’ agent, said that in his 40 years of working with the singer «there is no money in the world to sing the same song five times.» Clarin said that Navarro’s next response was threaten to sue Pablo Carbonell. However, he replied that it had been a twisted story for many years. He confirmed that Perales had indeed attended a private party in Colombia, but that he had never seen Pablo Escobar and added that Carbonell had spent so much on this joke that they didn’t want to take legal action.

Finally, the leader of Los Toreros Muertos was surprised by Berry’s reaction because he said the story he wrote in his book, «Is a story someone told me in 1988.» However, there is still a possibility that the story is true.
