STILL FIGHTING FOR HIS FREEDOM. Ovidio Guzmán López, better known as «El Ratón,» once again appears before a United States court.

This time, the son of Joaquín Guzmán Loera was in front of the Northern District of Illinois Court in Chicago to follow up on his case involving five charges.

Guzmán is accused of drug trafficking and money laundering, allegedly carried out under the Sinaloa cartel directed by «Los Chapitos.»

Early reports stated that «El Ratón,» specified that the hearing was led by Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman.

The hearing against the alleged trafficker was held to review the charges against Guzmán.

Responding to the authorities’ call, federal prosecutors confirmed that the crimes include distributing cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine.

The distribution of these substances was conducted from Mexico to the United States and spanned from 2008 to 2021, according to the news portal Infobae.

Regarding the defense, Jeffrey Lichtman emphasized to the authorities that he needs more time to review the evidence against «El Ratón.»

What’s Next for Ovidio Guzmán?

Following the new request from «El Chapo’s» son’s lawyer, it is estimated that the next hearing will be held on October 1.

Ovidio Guzmán, known for the Culiacanazo, faces five charges listed as follows:

  1. Possession of drugs with intent to distribute.
  2. Conspiracy to import, manufacture, and distribute controlled substances.
  3. Conspiracy for money laundering
  4. Participation in a continuous criminal enterprise.
  5. Possession of firearms.

«Not Guilty»

The first time he appeared in court, Guzmán López declared he was «not guilty» of the charges against him.

From his statements, there emerged the possibility that he «might assist» the United States in providing information about the Sinaloa Cartel.

However, the process changed when it was estimated that New York is not the only state prosecuting the Mexican, as it charged him with six counts.

According to Infobae, Ovidio Guzmán is currently held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.
