Oscar de la Hoya says Canelo Alvarez only wants money and criticizes his last fight

It seems the back-and-forth between Óscar De La Hoya and Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez is far from over.

As part of his weekly series, «Clapback Thursdays,» the former boxing champion and now promoter took to social media to share his thoughts on the current state of boxing.

De La Hoya didn’t hold back, claiming that the Mexican boxer is now only interested in making money.

He also made it clear how unimpressed he was with Canelo’s recent fight against Puerto Rican boxer Edgar Berlanga.

De la Hoya Asks: Where Is Boxing Heading?

In his signature style, De La Hoya remarked that the fight between Canelo Álvarez and Berlanga lacked any real excitement.

“Where is boxing going? The bar is set so low now that people are just happy to see fighters go 12 rounds,” he stated.

The promoter went on to remind fans that Canelo hasn’t knocked anyone out since 2021.

He even posed a question to boxing fans: “Don’t you want knockouts anymore?”

De La Hoya, whose professional record stands at 39-6, speaks from experience when criticizing Canelo Álvarez.

In the video, he claimed that all Canelo cares about now is getting paid, accusing him of avoiding higher-level fighters.

“He wants to walk comfortably into retirement. Where are the fighters with guts?”

“Don’t we want to see the best fight the best? Why are boxing fans accepting these low-competitiveness, low-entertainment fights?”

Promoter vs. Boxer

It’s worth remembering that De La Hoya had previously predicted that Canelo’s fight against Berlanga would be boring.

He also predicted that it would go to a decision—which is exactly what happened.

However, some critics of De La Hoya question why he’s still so focused on Canelo’s career.
