The problem with these labels lies in the fact that those determining their application are not healthcare professionals; it is the food industry itself that sets its own rules and regulations for labeling.

Are you suggesting, Claudio, that the companies selling sugary breakfast cereals, sodas, and energy drinks are the ones dictating the rules of the game?

Yes, indeed, we live in a world where money has control. Therefore, labeling highlights what the industry itself wants and is interested in.

No one else cares about your health, at least I do. So, why not subscribe? Keep in mind that these big companies invest considerable sums of money in advertising.

Nutritional labels in the media

Now you can understand that the information in the media can be so biased that what we see probably misinforms us more than it informs us.

Not only in advertisements but also observe what many protagonists of TV series or movies often consume. It may seem coincidental, but it’s not; there’s a lot of money behind it.

It’s amazing how there are nutrition and medical societies with conflicts of interest with the food industry.

As they contribute large sums of money, a small part of the nutritionists’ and doctors’ community ends up defending these food products. Once again, money is the one dictating the rules.

There are numerous congresses for doctors and nutritionists financed by these industries, and what will they tell them at these events? You can imagine.

Among the proposals that arise in these events is the idea that if a product has less than 3% fat, it can be labeled as low in fat, as if that were beneficial in itself.

In other words, you could fall into the mistake of thinking that fatty fish, seeds, nuts, or olive oil are worse food options than a 0.0% fat yogurt or a refined cereal bar.
