Extreme cold warning: Northeastern US braces for frigid temperatures

The meteorologists of AccuWeather have issued an alert about a blast of cold air that will bring snow and critical temperatures to the northeastern United States this weekend.

Following the passage of an Alberta hurricane and a coastal storm in the Atlantic, this polar cold will move south from Canada.

Temperatures will drop to critical levels, affecting millions of people with outdoor activities.

The cold will prevent the usual warming effects generated by the Great Lakes.

Polar air will impact the northeast

This is because the winds will blow from the north, rather than from the west or northwest, intensifying low temperatures.

On Friday, Storm Clipper will move through the Upper Midwest, generating strong winds and snow accumulations.

In Minneapolis and Green Bay, Wisconsin, AccuWeather temperatures will be just above zero, limiting outdoor activities and increasing risks of hypothermia.

Cities like Chicago, Detroit and Indianapolis will also experience extreme cold, in the 10s Fahrenheit for much of Friday.

Impact on the Northeast and New England

In the northeast, lake effect snow will increase between Thursday and Friday, aggravating conditions.

Although Clipper will weaken as it approaches the central Appalachians, another coastal storm will take center stage starting Friday night.

This storm could leave several inches of snow in parts of southeastern New England.

More worrying will be the intensification of winds, which will bring a new wave of Arctic air to the northeast.

Plans under extreme cold

Temperatures in cities such as New York, Boston and Philadelphia will not exceed 10 degrees on Saturday.

Washington, DC, will also face temperatures in the low 20s, unusual for this time of year.

On Saturday, many people plan to shop, attend college football games or play winter sports. It is recommended to wear thermal clothing, protect extremities and limit prolonged exposure to cold.

However, it is recommended to dress warmly due to the intense cold that will prevail in much of the northeast.

Actual temperatures will reach their lowest levels since last winter, with overnight lows rivaling those recorded in January.

In New York, temperatures on Sunday will not exceed 25 degrees, while minimums could fall to 10 degrees.

Starting Sunday night, high pressure will bring some respite to the Northeast.

Winds will decrease, and lake effect snow bands will lose intensity.

Although temperatures will remain cold, conditions will improve slightly at the beginning of next week.
