The latest computer projections suggest that rainfall will be even more intense than initially anticipated.

Predictions point to heavier rain along the I-95 corridor, stretching from Washington to Connecticut through Thursday.

«There will be a corridor from Connecticut to New Jersey, perhaps even closer to Delmarva, where this rain is reinforced by a coastal low,» said meteorologist Stephen Morgan.

«As for widespread rain, we will still see it in much of Pennsylvania to New York,» he added

The weather situation has even led to a flood alert that is valid until Thursday night for almost all of New Jersey, as well as for Philadelphia and northern Delaware.

Estimates indicate that rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches across much of the region by Thursday.

Isolated areas could get up to 3 inches of rain. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned northeastern New Jersey of the possibility of flooding

There could also be drainage problems from Philadelphia to New York City, due to the storm that will affect millions.

As heavy rain continues into Thursday night, the threat of flooding remains due to the slow-moving system.

The uncertainty continues into Friday night and even into Saturday morning, keeping residents and authorities in suspense.

This could cause problems for travelers heading to Boston, New York and Washington to celebrate the New Year.

FOX Weather experts predict travel delays to airports from the DC metropolitan area to Boston.

Roads will also be wet, but not very slippery. This is a warm system and most of the precipitation will fall as rain,

There is also the possibility of some cloudbursts Friday night. «Maybe you are traveling. Maybe you’re heading home,” Morgan said.

«AAA is expecting that Thursday is going to be one of the busiest days as folks are going to be hitting the road, heading back home Thursday,» he added.

«Wednesday into Thursday is going to be also the wettest day of this week. So, we’ll watch that along that I-95 corridor,” he continued.

However, the New Year’s Eve forecast won’t necessarily be a disaster as a weak ridge forms over the northeast and creates dry conditions.

«Don’t be deceived by this – these next three days – because in New York City, things are going to be improving,» Morgan said.

«We’re dealing with the cloudy, sort of gloomy conditions followed by the rain, but, overall, we’re going to see things dry out for the New Year.»

Residents in affected areas are being urged to take extra precautions and stay informed through local news channels.
