Jennifer Crumbley has become the first parent to be tried for a shooting committed by an underage child.

The prosecution argued that she is partially responsible for the tragedy.

She is accused of «gross negligence» for providing a gun to her son and failing to seek appropriate treatment for his mental health issues.

The shooting occurred on November 30, 2021, killing four students and injuring several more.

Ethan Crumbley pleaded guilty to terrorism, four counts of murder and 19 other charges related to the massacre.

Over the past week, witnesses, including school employees and people close to his mother, testified for the prosecution.

The prosecution argued that Jennifer Crumbley was aware of her son’s mental health issues. He allegedly asked her for help because he was having hallucinations about ghosts.

They argue that she did not take his symptoms seriously. Jennifer Crumbly took the stand and stated, «I have asked myself if I would have done anything differently.»

Jennifer Crumbley’s defense team adopted a strategy of placing blame on others.

They argued that the school did not adequately report the young man’s behavioral issues and that Ethan himself planned and carried out the attack independently.

Likewise, they point to the perpetrator’s father, James Crumbley, who faces a separate trial on the same charges in March, accusing him of not properly securing the firearm.

This gun was a gift to Ethan from his parents, a fact that the prosecution also used as a basis for the charges.

There are even videos on social media showing mother and son trying out the gun at a shooting range days before the attack.

Finally, the prosecution highlighted Crumbley’s inaction after a meeting at the school on the same day as the shooting,

School officials recommended that Ethan receive treatment for his mental health issues after finding a drawing he had done showing a gun and a bleeding person.

Jennifer denied ignoring the warning signs and pointed the finger at others.

She and her husband James are accused of having a firearm in their home that was accessible to anyone and of overlooking their son’s mental health needs.

«I have zero help for my mental problems and it’s causing me to shoot up the … school,» Ethan Crumbley wrote in his journal at the time.

«My parents won’t listen to me about help or therapist,» wrot the teenager, adding that he would spend his life in prison and that many people only have a day left to live.

The shooter wrote that he had access to a gun and bullets, according to The Associated Press.
