  • Genny de Bernardo shares the legend of the mother crow and her chicks.
  • A mother crow searches for her three adorable chicks in a snow-covered forest in the north.
  • She asks other forest animals for help in finding her young, describing them with maternal love.

Long ago, in the cold lands of the north, there was a vast forest of tall and leafy trees, covered by the last layers of snow that were gradually melting with the arrival of spring.

In this beautiful corner of nature lived a mother crow with her chicks. Every dawn, she undertook her daily search for food for her little ones, returning at noon.

However, one day, upon arriving at the nest, she did not receive the warm greeting of her children. Instead, an ominous silence greeted her, a mute response to her anguished calls.

Worried and filled with uncertainty, she descended restlessly and met the mother squirrel, to whom she asked the same question that hammered in her mind: had she seen her children?

The squirrel, curious and with a worried expression on her face, responded sympathetically: «Excuse me, Mrs. crow, have you seen my children?»

The mother crow, with a sigh of relief, proceeded to describe her chicks with maternal love: «My children are three adorable chicks, with feathers as soft as cotton and a sweet chirp that goes straight to the heart.»

However, the squirrel pondered for a moment and then answered sadly: «No, ma’am, I haven’t seen your children. I’m sorry I can’t help you.»

Mother crow continued her tireless search and came across the mother rabbit and her babies. Once again, she repeated the same question with growing anxiety: «Excuse me, Mrs. Rabbit, have you seen my children?»

What Do Her Children Look Like?

The mother rabbit, intrigued and compassionate, asked her to describe her chicks, to which the mother crow replied devotedly: «My children are small and beautiful, with eyes full of tenderness.»

Mrs. Rabbit, after a brief moment of reflection, said sympathetically: «No, I haven’t seen them. I’m very sorry I can’t help you.»

Mother crow consulted various other forest animals, but obtained no clues about the whereabouts of her children.

Finally, exhausted and full of worry, she met the mother fox, to whom she also asked the same question, with her heart in a knot: «Excuse me, Mrs. Fox, I have lost my children, have you seen them?»

No Whereabouts

The fox, noticing the anguish in mother crow’s eyes, understood the situation and asked empathetically: «Tell me, Mrs. crow, what do your children look like?»

Mother crow began to describe her chicks with deep love: «They are adorable chicks, with soft and smooth feathers, an exciting chirp, and a tender and innocent look. In short, they are the most beautiful chicks in the world.»

Mrs. Fox sighed in relief and replied with understanding: «No, Mrs. crow, I haven’t seen your children. A while ago I scared away some little birds, but they definitely do not match your description.»

«The ones I scared away were ugly birds, with ruffled feathers and they emitted an infernal cawing that wouldn’t stop. I chased them away from my den because they wouldn’t let my little ones sleep.»

Mother crow’s Love

«Surely by now they are on their way back home, probably scared by the experience, I doubt they want any more adventures.»

Mother crow, in a lament mixed with anguish, exclaimed in desperation: «Oh, those were my children!» and flew towards the nest, where finally, at the foot of the great tree, she found her little ones.

The fox reflected on how mother crow could consider «beautiful» those scruffy birds with such an unpleasant cawing as the crunching of a dry branch. Despite this, she found her own cubs charming, even though they were dirty and smelling of mud after playing near the river.
