That Saturday, Mónica Alcántar left her home at the Leawood Condominiums, on 9700 Leawood Boulevard, in her gray Kia Rio with Texas plates SSC-8387.
Nobody saw her again. Her family, after searching for her and asking her acquaintances and friends, decided to file a missing persons report.
The Houston Police Department (HPD) received the report and several officers began searching for the girl with the support of non-profit organizations.
Mónica Alcántar was missing for several days
The smiling image of Mónica Alcántar became familiar to all residents in the Houston metropolitan area.
Nonprofit Organization Volunteers Texas EquuSearch dedicated to helping to locate missing people, joined the search for Mónica Alcántar in forests, streams, empty lots and woods.
However, for several days all the efforts of HPD and Texas EquuSearch volunteers were in vain because no one could find Mónica Alcántar.
The case took a dramatic turn at noon on Sunday, September 10, 2023, when a person reported a dead woman in a parking garage.
She was found dead in a car in Chinatown
Several HPD patrol cars responded to a mall parking garage at 9889 Bellaire Boulevard, in the Chinatown neighborhood.
The woman inside the car already showed signs of decomposition. The official cause of death has not been determined by authorities.
Medical examiners from the The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences (IFS) identified the body as that of Mónica Alcántar.
The woman’s family was informed of the discovery of her body and detectives from the HPD Homicide Division began the investigation.
Police have images of a Hispanic man who may be related to the case
HPD detectives found the only clue they have so far in Mónica Alcántara’s case on security footage from the parking garage.
A young Hispanic man is seen walking away from the area where Mónica Alcántar’s body was found inside the vehicle. The police have several images of that man.
After he leaves the area where Mónica Alcántar was found, the man gets into a black Dodge Challenger and leaves the parking lot.
HPD detectives are asking the Hispanic community for their help in identifying the young man, who could be related to the death of Mónica Alcántar. They contact police at 713.308.3600.
«The family asks for privacy to process the news»
Boy Amador, Mónica Alcántar’s aunt, started a GoFundMe campaign to ask for financial support to cover funeral expenses.
«With all the sadness in my heart I have to announce that my niece has been found. She is no longer with us,” wrote Boy Amador.
«We would like to thank with all our hearts everyone that shared the post and helped,» the message continues.
“At this time the family asks for privacy to process the news. If you want to continue to support us for the funeral we would appreciate it,» she continues in her campaign, In memory of Monica Alcántar.
