The world of mixed martial arts is in mourning after the death of fighter Hakaraia Wilson, who passed away at the age of 26.
Multiple sources in New Zealand, his home country, confirmed the sad news.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 1st, when local police responded to a call about a «sudden death» during the Rhythm and Vines festival, held in the town of Gisborne.
The victim was later identified as Wilson.

«This death is not suspicious, and the case has been referred to the coroner,» said local police spokespeople to Te Ao News.
Hakaraia Wilson had dedicated the last four years of his life to mixed martial arts, where he stood out as a professional fighter.

His last fight was in October, always showing great passion and discipline for the sport.
On November 14, Wilson shared a photo from the hospital with his followers, announcing that he had undergone surgery on his left arm.

The young fighter was known for being deeply connected to his Maori roots, which he proudly reflected with his body covered in traditional tattoos.
In addition to his MMA career, Wilson also had contracts with sports clubs and worked as a model, according to The Sun.
Reactions from friends, colleagues, and followers have flooded social media with messages of condolence and memories of the fighter.
«I never spoke to him or knew him personally, but others who knew him always spoke very highly of him as a friend and person. May he rest in peace,» one message reads.

The official cause of his death has not yet been revealed.
