Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, a Democrat, has declared he doesn’t care if he goes to jail for opposing the mass deportations promised by Republican Donald Trump, who will begin his second term in January.

Johnston’s comments, which he later clarified, have sparked controversy among Republicans.

They argue that a local leader cannot oppose federal immigration policies, labeling such actions as “insurrection.”

Tom Homan, Trump’s incoming “border czar,” stated that interfering with federal agents constitutes a federal offense and expressed willingness to incarcerate Johnston if necessary.

The mayor has voiced his opposition to deploying U.S. troops for immigration enforcement.

However, he clarified that “if someone is a violent criminal who commits serious crimes like murder or rape in Denver, that person should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and deported.”

Johnston stated he is “not afraid” of being jailed for opposing what he calls an “illegal, immoral, and un-American” action.

The mayor has the support of humanitarian organizations such as Hope Has No Borders.

What’s Happening in Denver?

“The people of Denver, including mothers, neighbors, and newcomers alike, don’t want to live in a world where the U.S. military is deployed in our cities to knock on doors and take people away.”

“That’s not America and that’s not the world we live in,” lamented Andrea Ryall, executive director of the organization.

Local authorities across the United States are preparing to defend migrants against the policies of Trump’s incoming administration (2017–2021).

In Los Angeles, the city council voted unanimously last week to prohibit the direct or indirect use of local resources and personnel for federal immigration activities.

Which States Share the Same Stance?

Governors of California, Arizona, and New Mexico—three of the four border states with Mexico—have announced they will not participate in mass deportations.

In Denver, Ryall described the anti-immigrant rhetoric as “truly terrible.”

Margaret Thompson, chair of the board for the Rocky Mountain Welcome Center in Aurora, just east of Denver, also spoke out.

“The election results have created uncertainty and deep concern about the incoming administration’s policies, which have openly promoted xenophobia and division,” Thompson told EFE.

What Actions Will Be Taken?

Thompson declared that her organization would remain “steadfast in our mission to support immigrant and refugee families and foster a community rooted in equity, inclusion, and understanding.”

The organization plans to “adapt and expand” its services to ensure “every newcomer feels supported and valued” because “everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive” and be “prepared to face the challenges of 2025.”

In contrast, New York authorities seem optimistic about Trump’s immigration policies.

New York Mayor Eric Adams announced the cancellation of prepaid cards from the immigrant assistance program—valued at over $18,000 annually—and the closure of 12 immigrant shelters, citing confidence in Trump’s upcoming immigration policies.
