In videos of the incident, agents ordered García Vega to come out with his hands up.
Marco García, the detainee’s son, described the ICE operation as unnecessary and an act of intimidation.
«It was like a show for them,» Marco stated in an interview with AZ Central.
He also questioned ICE’s lack of sensitivity towards his father’s health condition.
During the operation, Marco demanded explanations and asked to speak with the team leader.
One of the agents warned him that if his father did not surrender, the situation would worsen.

Marco recalled that ICE needs a judicial order to make an arrest.
An agent replied that they were «working on getting it.»
Mexican Consul Demands Investigation into Migrant’s Arrest
The Consul of Mexico in Phoenix, Jorge Mendoza Yescas, requested an investigation to determine if ICE had an arrest warrant.
«It is our duty to know what happened because it could be a violation of rights,» he stated.
Judicial documents indicate that García Vega was deported on September 11, 2020.
He had been convicted of reentering the country illegally after a previous deportation.
His sentence included 24 months in prison and 36 months of probation.
