The former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, will not attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, scheduled for January 20th, as reported by American media this Tuesday.

Michelle Obama’s office confirmed to CBS News that former President Barack Obama will also not attend accompanied by his wife to the 60th presidential inauguration of the U.S.

This will be the second public event in less than a month that Obama attends alone. A couple of weeks ago, the Democrat was the only former president who entered alone at the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.

Unlike Obama, Trump attended with Melania Trump, and former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush were present with their respective former first ladies, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush.

Following Michelle Obama’s absence, CNN reported that she was in Hawaii, which would explain her absence at Carter’s funeral. However, no further details were given about her absence at the inauguration.

On January 20th, Republican Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States in a ceremony at the Capitol at noon.

During the presidential campaign on November 5th, both Barack and Michelle Obama campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s rival in the elections.

At a rally, the former first lady described the Republican as a «risk,» especially to American women, and questioned his mental state. Later, Trump called her «nasty.»

Michelle Obama will not attend Donald Trump’s inauguration after missing Jimmy Carter’s funeral.

The former first lady will skip the president-elect’s ceremony, and CBS News reported this snub, noting that her spokesperson declined to provide reasons for her absence.

The former first lady did not attend Carter’s funeral due to a «scheduling conflict,» as she was enjoying an extended break in Hawaii, where Barack Obama was born. She celebrated her 61st birthday on Friday.

Since the death of her mother, Marian Robinson, in May, Michelle Obama has been less publicly involved.

When she spoke at the Democratic National Convention in August, she shared that her grief nearly prevented her from taking the stage.

«I still feel her loss so deeply, I wasn’t even sure I could stand firm enough to stand in front of you tonight,» she told the crowd in Chicago.

Despite this, Michelle Obama led several campaign events for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris before Election Day.

Typically, former presidents and first ladies attend inaugurations, even for presidents of opposing parties, unless they have health issues.

However, Trump broke that precedent four years ago by refusing to attend the inauguration ceremony of his successor, Joe Biden.

First Lady Melania Trump also did not attend Biden’s inauguration.

For his part, Barack Obama does plan to attend Trump’s inauguration.

Obama and Trump caused a stir on the internet on Thursday when they appeared very conversational during Carter’s memorial service.

This meeting occurs after Trump promoted the ‘birther’ theory, claiming Obama was born in Kenya and not Hawaii.

Obama humiliated Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 2011, one of the reasons that motivated Trump to run in 2016.

Before the program, Obama appeared to laugh at something Trump said.

Other dignitaries did not react the same way upon seeing the Trumps.

Former Second Lady Karen Pence refused to acknowledge the Trumps, remaining seated as they passed.

Former Vice President Mike Pence stood up and shook Trump’s hand after Al Gore did the same.

The Trumps and Pence distanced themselves after the events of January 6th, when the MAGA crowd chanted «hang Mike Pence.»

Former President George W. Bush initially passed by the Trumps to greet Obama at the Washington National Cathedral.

He gave him a friendly pat on the belly before shaking hands with the incoming president.

Although Bush did not go as far as his former vice president Dick Cheney, who endorsed Harris, he did alert the country about domestic terrorism after January 6th.

Donald Trump, for his part, criticized Bush’s presidency, calling it «failed and uninspired» and suggesting he should not «lecture» on domestic terrorism.

Before that, Trump humiliated Bush’s brother, Jeb, in the 2016 campaign, mocking the former Florida governor for being «low energy,» a criticism that endured.
