The Mexican government announced this Saturday that it will transport migrants from its southern border who have an appointment through the ‘CBP One’ app.

This will occur from the United States Customs and Border Protection to request asylum, as reported by EFE.

The Ministry of the Interior (Segob) and the National Institute of Migration (INM) stated in a joint press release:

«The establishment of an ‘Emergent Safe Mobility Corridor’ to assist in the land transport of foreign nationals who have an appointment» with U.S. authorities.

This measure was announced a week after CBP stated that migrants can now manage their asylum application appointments.

This procedure can be carried out in Chiapas and Tabasco, states on Mexico’s southern border.

The new rule, announced about two and a half months before the U.S. presidential elections, aims to prevent migrants from overcrowding the shared border with Mexico.

Where daily detentions of undocumented individuals have decreased by 77% since December, according to data from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Is there an increased demand for CBP One appointments?

The Mexican government now indicated that, since the new measure:

«300 individuals who requested their ‘CBP One’ appointment in Tabasco and Chiapas received a response to their request within a few days.»

While the final point of the journey was not detailed, Segob and INM described that the transportation of migrants will be done by bus.

These buses will be accompanied by «security institutions at the federal, state, and municipal levels.»

What states will be part of this regulation?

The departure points will be the Villahermosa Migration Station, the capital of Tabasco, and the Southern Zone Migration Regulation office in Tapachula.

Which is part of the state of Chiapas, the main border crossing between Mexico and Guatemala.

The agencies promised to provide «food during the corresponding trips.»

The Mexican policy includes giving migrants with the ‘CBP One’ appointment a Multiple Immigration Form (FMM) to have a regular stay condition for 20 days.

Why was this project instituted?

Additionally, government institutions assured that the project is a strategy to «ensure the safety of foreign nationals who decide to travel by land to their appointment entry point.»

«To protect family unity, the immigration authority will prioritize these family units to travel together,» they added.

Although detentions at the border with the United States have fallen, irregular migration through Mexico increased by 193% year-on-year.

This in the first half of the year to surpass 712,000, according to the Government’s Migration Policy Unit.
