A phone call between U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has sparked anticipation regarding migration and trade policies between the two nations.
The conversation took place 48 hours after Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on all Mexican imports.
The potential tariff is contingent upon Mexico’s collaboration in curbing migration and drug trafficking into the U.S.
“I just had a wonderful conversation with Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She has agreed to stop migration through Mexico and into the United States, effectively sealing our southern border.

We also discussed ways to halt the massive flow of drugs into the U.S. and tackle American drug consumption.
It was a very productive conversation,» Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Shortly after, Trump reiterated his stance in another post:
“Mexico will prevent people from reaching our Southern Border, with immediate effect. THIS WILL GREATLY HELP STOP THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE U.S.!!! Thank you!!!”
Trump and Sheinbaum: Optimism With Notable Differences
Both Trump and Sheinbaum described the conversation as positive.
Trump was optimistic, emphasizing Mexico’s commitment to immediately block migrant arrivals. Sheinbaum, however, highlighted Mexico’s existing efforts, such as reducing caravan activity at the northern border.
Yet, key differences remain:
Trump credits his «carrot-and-stick» policies for the agreement, while Sheinbaum underscores Mexico’s ongoing initiatives to control migration and combat fentanyl trafficking to the U.S.
Trade Diplomacy and Mexico’s Concerns
Despite the call easing tensions, Sheinbaum maintained a strong stance against tariffs.
She warned that protectionist policies like tariffs would harm competitiveness and asserted that Mexico prefers to «complement» the U.S. rather than be subjected to sanctions.
The Biden administration’s migration policies have also shaped the context.
In recent months, migrant arrivals have significantly decreased due to U.S. restrictions and Mexico’s measures to manage migration flows, according to El País.
