The Mexican Government described the imposition of tariffs by the United States on steel and aluminum as «a bad idea,» but assured that it will respond with «cold blood» and «firmness.»
The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, stated that the measure will affect multiple industries due to the high economic integration between both countries.
«We think it’s a bad idea because the integration between Mexico and the United States, as I mentioned previously, is very high. We are the two most integrated economies. So, imposing a tariff will obviously affect many industries,» said Ebrard.
The 25% tariff imposed by the United States on imports of steel and aluminum took effect on March 12, despite negotiation attempts by President Claudia Sheinbaum with her American counterpart, Donald Trump.
Mexico Responds with Strategy and Firmness to Tariffs
«What President Claudia Sheinbaum has instructed us, from my perspective, with the experience I have, this strategy of firmness and cold blood is the best possible strategy. And it is yielding results,» asserted the Secretary of Economy.
During the presidential press conference, Ebrard indicated that Mexico will use «all the instruments» at its disposal to respond to the measure strategically.
He announced that starting Friday, consultations with affected industries will begin to determine the next steps, without acting hastily.
«We will not take them abruptly,» he emphasized.
The Secretary highlighted that the goal is to defend Mexican companies and achieve a review of the tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum.
Ebrard also stated that any measure taken will consider the outlook on April 2, when Trump will announce a new round of tariffs on various countries.

Mexico, he said, is in a different economic situation compared to other nations, especially regarding the European Union.
«There is no other country, not even Canada, with which there is an economic integration like that between Mexico and the United States,» he emphasized.
He stressed that a tariff war benefits no one and that Mexico will seek to strengthen the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to maintain regional competitiveness.
On March 4, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Mexican exports, but after a call with Sheinbaum, the measure was postponed until April 2.
The tariffs primarily affect Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Vietnam in the steel sector, while in aluminum, they impact the United Arab Emirates, Russia, and China.
Faced with this situation, the European Union announced commercial retaliatory measures worth 28 billion euros, while Canada will impose tariffs of 25% on US imports worth 20.7 billion dollars.
