The debut of the Mexican gymnasts in Paris was marked by injuries and falls.

Alexa Moreno arrived with an injury to the cartilage in her right knee, which prevented her from qualifying for the final.

Natalia Escalera, on the eve of her debut, tore the plantar ligament in her left leg, leading her to compete in pain.

Ahtziri Sandoval, for her part, had an unfortunate debut with two falls on the vault and a shaky exit on the uneven bars.

Moreno expressed her frustration after her participation in the Arena Bercy: «I usually arrive injured, like this time. But getting injured there, a day before, is much more complicated.»

Despite the adversities, Escalera’s courage to compete was highlighted, which already makes her an Olympian.

Sandoval, despite an intense preparation that included a month-long camp in Madrid, did not perform as expected, AP reported.

Her floor routine earned her just 11.833 points.

«The balance is positive, because I’m here,» said Sandoval, «but a little negative, because it wasn’t what I had worked for and it wasn’t what I had trained for.»

Moreno, who finished fourth in the vault in Tokyo, failed to make it into the top eight in Paris, scoring 13.949 points.

At 29 years old and with three Olympic Games, Moreno reflected on her future in gymnastics: «Everyone tells me that I can’t do it anymore. I’m too old,» she said with good humor.

Escalera, despite doctors’ advice, decided to compete on the uneven bars. She announced her injury on Instagram, sharing a message of courage and gratitude:

«I didn’t come this far to avoid being on the biggest stage in the world. Only God knows why he does things, but here I am now, fighting until the end!»

On the other hand, the famous Texan gymnast, Simone Biles, revealed a discomfort in her left foot that scared many.

Biles left the floor for a moment at the end of her routine on the balance beam.

Minutes later she returned and revealed her discomfort. Even though she was not in her prime, the 27-year-old Texan showed why she is the most decorated gymnast in the history of the sport, according to AP.
