Brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez have requested early release from prison ahead of Thanksgiving, with their legal team presenting a new strategy to secure their freedom.

Their attorney, Mark Geragos, is preparing documents to send to California Governor Gavin Newsom, seeking clemency.

According to Governor Newsom’s official page, clemency can lead to a sentence reduction or a «pardon,» which offers relief from punishment and restores certain civil rights to those who have been convicted.

Geragos expressed his hope that the brothers could be home not only for Thanksgiving but also to celebrate their aunt Joan VanderMolen’s 93rd birthday, along with their aunt Terry Barait.

The lawyer also indicated plans to request the judge in their upcoming resentencing hearing to change the brothers’ conviction from murder to manslaughter.

If granted, this request could lead to their immediate release due to time already served.

The Menendez brothers were sentenced to life without parole in 1996 for the murders of their parents, Kitty and José Menendez.

During their trial, they claimed they acted in self-defense after enduring years of sexual abuse by their father.

The case was reopened on October 24 by Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, citing public interest following the release of a limited Netflix series and a documentary on the Menendez brothers.

Gascon stated, «They have been in prison for nearly 35 years» and believes «they have paid their debt to society.»

The possibility of their release has sparked varied reactions.

Figures from the entertainment world, like Kim Kardashian, have shown support for their cause, emphasizing that the brothers deserve «a second chance» and praising Gascon for «righting a significant wrong.»

However, others, like pop culture commentator Perez Hilton, have voiced concerns about the treatment the brothers might face upon release. Hilton warns that the Menendez brothers could face intense public scrutiny, similar to what Gypsy Rose Blanchard experienced after her recent release from prison.

“A lot of people will turn against them, and they’ll be under a microscope after their release,” he commented.

A new judge is expected to be assigned to the case, with the resentencing hearing scheduled for next month.

With Thanksgiving on the horizon, the community and followers of this case are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the legal proceedings and the potential implications for Erik and Lyle Menendez’s future.
