Following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that shook Japan on Thursday, there are now warnings about the possibility of a megaquake.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, there is a serious warning that a devastating megaquake could occur.

The worst-case scenario predicts that such an event could result in the deaths of at least 300,000 people.

The region known as the Nankai Trough is on high alert; however, it is not expected that the megaquake will occur in the coming days.

The news outlet ‘Antenna 3‘ reported information from the Meteorological Agency, indicating that people should be prepared for the potential disaster.

Experts warn that the megaquake would not only result in massive casualties but could also trigger powerful aftershocks and tsunamis.

However, while the probability of such an event has increased, this does not mean that the megaquake will happen in the immediate future.

It’s important to note that earthquakes and tremors cannot be predicted with certainty regarding timing or magnitude.

The accumulated tensions of the tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in the Nankai Trough, have the potential to cause a megaquake every 100 to 150 years.

The alarm intensifies when Japanese experts calculate that there is a 70 to 80 percent chance of it occurring within the next 30 years.

The scale of megaquakes exceeds magnitudes of 8 and 9, which are considered devastating.

It’s also crucial to remember that Japan lies along the Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer horseshoe-shaped area that stretches from Japan to Chile and New Zealand, known for its intense seismic activity.
