One cannot deny the vastness and incredible biodiversity of the rainforest. Part of the reason why there is such a push to stop deforestation in the Amazon is due to the rainforest plants that have medicinal properties, healing everything from anxiety to infertility. That said, we’re ruining it. And although deforestation is declining, there used to be 6 million square miles of rainforest worldwide and today only 2.4 million remain.

The Amazon rainforest is especially vital because of it’s incredible array of medicinal plants, which are used in over a quarter of today’s drugs. A whopping 70% of plants with anticancer properties exist only in the Amazon. Ergo, it’s on us as humans to protect this stuff in order to give scientists and researchers time to fully explore all the amazing plants there, some of which could be the cure for cancer or even Alzheimer’s. We believe preservation begins with information, so we gathered up a list of 10 medicinal plants from the Amazon that have healing properties.

This amazing plant can be used as an anesthetic. It’s valuable for native cultures as they care for individuals who are ill or have suffered an injury.

This wonder plant has been used to treat cancer, alleviate pain from chemotherapy, and fight infections.

1. Uncaria Tomentosa (Cat’s Claw)

This has recently made its way to the U.S. where it’s being studied as a possible cancer and HIV/AIDS treatment.

4. Tawari Tree Bark

Traditionally tawari has been used to lower blood sugar levels, treat liver disease and fight infection. In the U.S., it is known for its analgesic, anticancer and antifungal properties.

5. Sodo

This is one of the most fascinating of the healing plants, as it is thought to help cure addiction. Knowing that our country is suffering from quite the epidemic of addicts, we have to wonder what would come of this being introduced here.

6. Pusangade Motelo

Proof that you don’t necessarily need to take mass-produced psychotropic medications to be happy, as this plant can relieve anxiety and is reported to have a calming effect on the user.

7. Cola de Raton (Rat’s Tail)

We know. The name isn’t pretty, but this is one of the medicinal plants that is said to help with digestion so we’re not judging.

8. Canelilla

This one is used to treat women with ovarian cysts and could even increase the likelihood of conception.

9. Liana

The sap from this plant is extracted and then used to treat fever in children. Safer than Tylenol? We couldn’t tell you.

10. Suma (Brazilian Ginseng)

In our typical fashion, we have saved the best of all the healing plants for last. Suma is an aphrodisiac, a healing tonic, an energizer, an immune system enhancer and has anticancer properties. Yes please!
