The New York State Department of Health has issued a travel alert for measles, including Ontario, and is urging tourists to get vaccinated before visiting the Canadian province.

“Measles is just a car ride away!” the Department stated in an advisory dated April 2.

“Because measles is so contagious, it easily crosses borders. There are currently outbreaks in several parts of the U.S. and Canada—especially Ontario—and worldwide,” the notice added.

The alert comes as Ontario continues to manage an outbreak that began in the fall and has so far resulted in 661 confirmed cases—the highest number in over a decade.

Last week, the province reported 89 new cases of measles, a slight drop from the 100 cases reported the previous week and 120 the week before that.

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, stated that the outbreak is primarily linked to unvaccinated children in the Southwestern Ontario Public Health Unit and is expected to continue through the summer.

Moore also urged Ontario residents to ensure their measles vaccinations are up to date and reminded parents that two doses are required: the first at 12 months of age and the second between ages 4 and 6.

New York health officials echoed this message, emphasizing that other countries are also experiencing a surge in measles cases, including India, Thailand, Pakistan, Yemen, and Ethiopia.

There have also been outbreaks in the United States, and on Sunday, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited Texas, where two unvaccinated children died from a measles-related illness.

Recently, health authorities in New Jersey issued an alert about potential measles exposure at Newark International Airport.
