Ismael «El Mayo» Zambada, one of the most notorious leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, has fallen into the hands of US authorities.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Zambada was the victim of a cunning betrayal by Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of Joaquin «El Chapo» Guzman.

El Mayo thought he was going to oversee one of the cartel’s clandestine airstrips in Texas, but it was a carefully orchestrated trap.

In a surprising twist, both Zambada and Guzmán López were captured at the scene.

Was El Mayo Zambada deceived by El Chapo’s son?

Hours later, a shocking video emerged showing both men arriving on a private plane. Upon landing, they were met by DEA agents, who immediately detained them.

The U.S. Department of Justice was quick to comment on these high-profile arrests. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland issued a strong statement.

“The Department of Justice has arrested two additional alleged leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world. Ismael Zambada Garcia, or “El Mayo,” co-founder of the Cartel, and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of its other co-founder, were arrested today in El Paso, Texas.”

«Both men face multiple charges in the United States for leading the Cartel’s criminal operations, including its deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks,» Garland said.

Capture of El Mayo and Guzman Lopez

These arrests mark a significant blow to the Sinaloa Cartel. El Mayo and Guzmán López now join a growing list of Cartel leaders who have been detainees.

This list includes the co-founder of the Cartel, Joaquin «El Chapo» Guzman Loera, and another of his sons, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, according to Infobae.

Ovidio Guzmán is also considered one of the main leaders of the Cartel. In addition, among those captured is Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, known as «El Nini», the alleged main hitman of the Cartel.

The fall of these leaders could change the dynamics of drug trafficking in the region. The Sinaloa Cartel has been one of the most powerful and violent criminal groups in the world.
