The Russian capital, Moscow, was the target of one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks since the war began in 2022, according to Russian authorities.

The attack occurred as Ukrainian forces advanced in the Russian region of Kursk, as reported by the AP news agency.

On Wednesday, the governor of the Russian region of Bryansk, Alexander Bogomaz, stated that Russian forces had repelled a Ukrainian attempt to enter that region.

The Mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin, described the attack as «one of the largest attempts in history to attack Moscow using drones.»

The Ukrainian incursion into Russia has boosted morale in Ukraine with its unexpected success and has changed the dynamics of the conflict.

However, it is also risky, as Ukrainian forces were already overstretched due to fighting over a stretch of more than 970 kilometers.

The Central Election Commission of Russia announced that local elections in six districts and one city in the Kursk region scheduled for September 8 will be postponed.

It also reported that they will be rescheduled when voter safety can be guaranteed.

The spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, stated that Ukraine’s attack on Kursk has ended «any possibility» of peace negotiations.

«Who will negotiate with them after this, after the atrocities and terror they are committing against peaceful residents, the civilian population, civilian infrastructure, and peaceful facilities?» she asked.

Ukraine claims it respects the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian laws of war.

The Minister of the Interior of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, said that the Ukrainian military has established an office in the Kursk region.

According to the official, the office will provide humanitarian and medical aid to the local population.
