Mario Vargas Llosa, one of the most influential writers of the 20th century and a key figure in Spanish-language literature, died on Saturday, April 13, at the age of 89 in his hometown of Lima.

The news was confirmed by his children, who stated in a press release that the author passed away “peacefully, surrounded by his family.”

“He had a long, multifaceted, and fruitful life,” expressed Álvaro, Gonzalo, and Morgana Vargas Llosa in the statement shared with the media.

In the letter, the family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of affection and requested privacy to grieve in peace. They also announced that no public farewell ceremonies would be held, in accordance with the writer’s wishes. His remains will be cremated.
