Maria Gomez Perez, 12, disappeared from her home in Gainesville, Georgia, on May 29.
Almost two months later, she was located in Ohio.
The girl was found after her father received a message asking them to stop the search.
Now Maria is back in Georgia, but her dad hasn’t seen her yet.
Custody and Future of Maria Gomez Perez
The fate of the minor remains uncertain.
Maria is in the custody of the state Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS).
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this to Univision 34 Atlanta.
The conditions that led the girl to leave her home are being investigated.
It is not known when, or if, he will return home to Gainesville.
Univision 34 Atlanta contacted DFCS to ask about the investigation.
DFCS responded that it cannot comment on specific cases due to privacy laws.
Maria was found safe in Ohio along with Antonio Agustin, 34.
The girl was found after a message she allegedly sent to her father from a new Facebook account.
The message asked them not to look for her anymore.
The Hall County Sheriff clarified that the victim is the minor.
Although Maria apparently left of her own free will, she is only 12 years old.
She can’t make those kinds of decisions on her own, Sheriff Gerald Couch said.
Antonio Agustín traveled 9 hours to pick up the girl.
They both traveled together to Ohio.
Augustine could face felony charges in Ohio and Georgia.
