Opposition leader María Corina Machado has reportedly been kidnapped on Thursday, January 9, after participating in a protest in Chacao.
Machado, who recently came out of hiding after 133 days, called for protests across Venezuela in the lead-up to the presidential swearing-in of Edmundo González Urrutia, who defeated Nicolás Maduro in the July 28 elections.
The news of the possible kidnapping was first reported on Twitter by the official ComandoVZLA account, which informed:
“María Corina Machado was violently intercepted as she left the gathering in Chacao. We expect to confirm her situation in minutes. Regime forces shot at the motorcycles that were transporting her.”

Journalist Carla Angola also denounced the incident on her official account, posting:
“#URGENT The regime kidnapped María Corina. 17 motorcycles, drones, and jeep trucks shot at the motorcycles transporting her, knocked them over, injured one of the motorcyclists, and took him along with her. @MariaCorinaYA”
Machado had reappeared publicly after months of anonymity to lead the protests against Nicolás Maduro’s government.
The protests, organized across the country, have been met with repression and police deployments by the regime, according to human rights organizations and activists.
