A strong magnitude 8 earthquake on the Richter scale struck the Caribbean coast of Honduras this Thursday, prompting authorities to issue a preventive alert for a tsunami threat.
The seismic event occurred at 9:07 AM local time (3:07 PM GMT) with a depth of 25 kilometers in the Caribbean waters northwest of the country.
As reported by the National Secretariat for Risk Management and National Contingencies.
As a precaution, the alert covers the department of Islas de la Bahía and the Honduran Caribbean coast and will remain in effect for 24 hours from 10:30 AM local time (4:30 PM GMT).

The National Center for Atmospheric, Oceanographic, and Seismic Studies (Cenaos), along with the Central American Tsunami Advisory Center, estimates that the waves generated by the earthquake could reach a height of up to 30 centimeters on most Honduran coasts.
However, a greater impact is expected at Barra de Patuca, with waves ranging between 30 centimeters and 1 meter.

Given the imminent risk after the earthquake, Honduran authorities urged residents of coastal areas, beaches, ports, and bays to immediately move to safe locations and avoid approaching the sea to observe the phenomenon.
Additionally, the Directorate of the Merchant Marine was requested to restrict navigation of all types of vessels to prevent incidents.
«For sailors at sea, where time and conditions permit, it is suggested to move their vessels to deeper waters, at least 450 feet (137.16 meters),» authorities stated in an official communication.
Honduras maintains an active green alert, which involves constant monitoring of the earthquake and preparation for a possible disaster. The population is advised to stay informed through official channels and follow the directions of authorities to ensure their safety.
