«Where is Edmundo González Urrutia hiding?!» exclaimed Maduro, in an attempt to delegitimize his adversary amid allegations concerning the legality of the electoral process.

The president suggested that González, who he claimed «is hiding in a cave,» was organizing an escape to Miami, taking with him a large sum of money.

These accusations come in a context of growing uncertainty and discontent in Venezuela. Following Maduro’s reelection, several foreign countries have refused to recognize the results.

And thousands of citizens have taken to the streets in massive demonstrations to demand transparency in the electoral process, according to El País.

The controversy intensified when Maduro urged authorities to imprison Edmundo González and another prominent opposition figure, María Corina Machado, whom he accused of «inciting rebellion.»

These statements have been interpreted as an attempt to silence opposition leaders and quell the growing protests against his reelection.

According to official data provided by Maduro’s government, the president would have obtained 52% of the votes in the recent elections.

However, both González and Machado have challenged these results, claiming that the electoral records they possess indicate that González was the true winner of the elections.
