While King Charles III undergoes cancer treatment, he remains the monarch and head of state of the United Kingdom.

But with the unexpected diagnosis of the late Queen Elizabeth’s son, doubts arise about who would assume the throne if something were to happen to him.

Obviously, his eldest son, Prince William, leads the succession to the throne, but there are many more behind him.

King Charles III has been diagnosed with a form of cancer and has begun treatment, Buckingham Palace announced on Monday.

Less than 18 months into his reign, he will suspend his public duties but will continue with state affairs and will not relinquish his constitutional duties as head of state.

The Palace said the cancer is unrelated to the king’s recent treatment for a benign prostate condition.

However, it did not specify the type of cancer the 75-year-old monarch is suffering from, as reported by The Associated Press news agency. Below is the line of succession to the throne of the United Kingdom.

Prince William and his children are first in line to the throne

Leading the line of succession to the throne is Prince William, the eldest son of King Charles III and the late Princess Diana.

He is known as the Prince of Wales and is married to Kate Middleton, who is known as the Princess of Wales.

His three children follow him in the line of succession to the British crown.

Prince George of Cambridge, born in July 2013; Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, born in May 2015; and Prince Louis of Cambridge, born in April 2018.

Prince Harry is fifth in line to the throne

Although Prince Harry has stepped back from his royal duties, he maintains his place in the line of succession.

The younger son of King Charles III and the late Princess Diana is fifth in line to the throne.

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, the son of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was born in May 2019 and is sixth in line.

Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger daughter of Prince Harry and Meghan, born in June 2021, is seventh in line to the throne.

Prince Andrew is eighth in line to the throne

Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, is eighth in line to the throne.

Princess Beatrice, Andrew’s eldest daughter with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, is ninth in line to the throne.

Sienna Elizabeth, daughter of Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, born in September 2021, is eleventh in line.

In the twelfth place in the line of succession is Princess Eugenie, the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
