Guaraní tradition tells the story of a young puma that was left alone in the world when aboriginal hunters ended the lives of its parents.

It was Luna, the daughter of the chief of the Chichiguay tribe, who secretly raised it.

Over time, the cub grew into a magnificent feline. Its presence could no longer be hidden, so it became an integral part of the community.

The bond between the puma and the princess grew stronger and stronger, becoming inseparable companions. The puma, being an exceptional hunter, contributed to the tribe’s food supply.

When the Queraguay, ancestral enemies, planned a surprise attack during the night, the puma demonstrated its bravery and cunning by driving away most of the invaders.

The armed Chichiguay, ready for battle, were able to defeat the rest thanks to the courage and skill of the puma.

Over time, the puma, nicknamed «Yagua,» became a prominent figure in the village.

Children played with him, and women could safely carry out their daily tasks in the jungle under his protection.

Not even the most fearsome creatures dared to disturb the community while Yagua was nearby. However, the enemies of the Chichiguay did not rest.

The Queraguay, in alliance with the Quitiguay, planned another attack, this time with the intention of eliminating the puma, knowing it was the most powerful weapon of the Chichiguay.

Under the cover of night, the Queraguay warriors attacked the village.

Yagua, vigilant as always, bravely confronted Luna’s kidnappers but was surrounded by enemies armed with spears and arrows poisoned with curare.

Despite his fierce efforts, Yagua was gravely wounded. In a final act of sacrifice, he protected Luna until the end, defeating the last of the attackers.

With a roar that echoed throughout the jungle, he bid farewell to Luna and the Chichiguay tribe before heading towards the river.

It is said that in honor of the brave puma, the river waters were dyed the color of his majestic fur. Since then, the river has been known as the River of Silver, always remembering the courage and sacrifice of Yagua, the immortal.
