«Simply knowing the history, with the greats who have graced this league, and seeing some of those greats on the court tonight, makes competing truly wonderful,» reflected James.
«But for me, as always, the most important thing is winning, and I hate that this milestone occurred in a loss.»
He evaded Michael Porter Jr. and scored on a layup with 10:39 remaining in the second quarter, marking the historic basket.
The crowd rose to their feet to applaud James at the next break in play.

LeBron James makes history
LeBron James reached the 39,000-point mark on November 21 during the In-Season tournament against the Utah Jazz.
Aaron Gordon hit a three-pointer with 3:49 minutes remaining to reclaim the lead for Denver, which closed the game with a 16-6 run to secure their sixth consecutive victory.
Porter nailed all five of his three-point attempts to finish with 25 points, Jamal Murray totaled 24 points and 11 assists, while Gordon ended with 18 points.
James scored 26 points and dished out nine assists, but the Lakers fell short of what would have been their third consecutive win.
