This followed President Joe Biden’s disastrous performance in the June debate, which shattered his own supporters’ confidence in his re-election prospects.
At the same time, it sparked an extraordinary internal war over whether he should remain in the race.
As soon as Biden abruptly ended his candidacy, Harris and her team worked to secure the backing of the 1,976 party delegates needed to secure the nomination in a formal vote.
She reached that milestone at breakneck speed, with an Associated Press poll of national delegates showing she secured the necessary committed delegates in just 32 hours after Biden’s announcement.
Harris’ nomination became official after a five-day round of online voting by Democratic National Convention delegates that ended Monday night.
The party made the announcement in a statement released just before midnight, confirming that 99% of delegates who cast votes did so for Harris.

Harris has already signaled that she does not plan to deviate much from the themes and policies that framed Biden’s candidacy.
Such as democracy, gun violence prevention and abortion rights.
