U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris sought to connect with undecided Latino voters on Thursday by emphasizing her roots as the daughter of immigrants.

During the forum «Los Latinos Preguntan… Kamala Harris Responde,» organized by Univision in Las Vegas, Nevada, Harris shared the stage with citizens who have yet to decide their vote.

The event, designed to address key concerns of the Latino community, did not shy away from the thorny issue of immigration.

One of the most emotional moments of the night came from Ivett Castillo, a 40-year-old woman born in Los Angeles, who broke down in tears as she shared the story of her mother, María Dolores Figueroa.

Figueroa, an undocumented immigrant, passed away recently without having been able to legalize her status—a situation that has affected millions of people in the country for decades.

With her voice trembling, Castillo asked Harris what her plan would be to help the undocumented population, a marginalized group that has been living in the shadows for years without clear solutions in sight.

Harris, visibly moved, recalled her own mother, an immigrant from India, and expressed her empathy towards Castillo.

However, the vice president did not offer specific commitments regarding a pathway to citizenship for the undocumented, leaving many with mixed feelings.

Instead, Harris blamed former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party for blocking the Biden administration’s efforts to reform the immigration system.

“Trump prefers to campaign on a problem rather than solve it,” Harris stated, attempting to shift the criticism toward the Republican opposition.

The immigration system, Harris argued, is broken and needs a «humane» reform that also strengthens border security.

Although the issue of undocumented immigrants was left unresolved, Harris strongly defended the dreamers, young individuals protected by the DACA program (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

She described the dreamers as people who have contributed greatly to American society, excelling in various fields such as education and public service.

“I will keep fighting for the dreamers,” Kamala Harris promised, attempting to offer hope to a group that already enjoys temporary protection.

However, this defense of the dreamers was not enough for Ivett Castillo, whose mother did not qualify for this group.

Ms. Figueroa, like millions of undocumented immigrants, did not meet the requirements for DACA and was trapped in legal limbo for years. This group of immigrants has witnessed numerous political promises come and go without any real solution materializing.
