- Julissa’s children were taken away because she’s a lesbian.
- This happened in Mérida, Mexico.
- She fought to regain custody.
In October 2022, Julissa became a mother for the second time. However, her children were taken away from her because she is a lesbian.
A social worker at the Agustín O’Horán General Hospital in Mérida, Mexico, raised questions about her sexual orientation.
Upon confirming that she identified as a lesbian, Julissa was told that she would not be a good example for her newborn baby and her 6-year-old son, who was also taken away.

Fortunately, Julissa, the mother whose two children were taken away because she’s a lesbian, received support from the Lesbian Mothers Network in Mexico.
«The authorities in Yucatán may have acted out of ignorance of human rights,» said activist Ana de Alejandro.
She added that the newborn was denied the right to bond with her mother, which occurs in the first month of life.
«Julissa is a responsible mother, non-violent and fully willing and entitled to raise her daughter and her 6-year-old son,» she said.
Since when is it common practice to ask about a mother’s sexual orientation?
According to Sin Embargo, Julissa chose to become a single mother and raise her children on her own.
This caught the attention of a social worker, who took her baby and then launched an investigation into her 6-year-old son.
She discovered that the child’s birth was not registered, and a psychologist determined he was being abused.
«This would be the first time that the State has taken custody of the children of a lesbian mother on grounds of sexual orientation and gender expression,» said Ana de Alejandro.
Lesbians have the right to be mothers too
The director of the Lesbian Mothers Network questioned why the social worker asked Julissa why she wanted to be a mother if she is a lesbian.
«Lesbians want children because we do, just like anyone else, and it is a right protected by the Constitution of our country,» she said.
At that time, Julissa was 30 years old and worked as a bricklayer’s assistant.
To regain custody of her children, the authorities requested numerous documents, as well as tests and evidence.
Were Julissa’s children returned to her?
Weeks later, according to Homosensual, Julissa’s children were returned to her.
This was thanks to the protest she staged in front of the Government Palace and after reaching out to the media.
She also received support from various institutions, such as the Lesbian Mothers Network.
«I was carrying stones and working hard to get the non-criminal records. And, honestly, it doesn’t seem fair to me,» said Julissa.
Neighbors show their support for Julissa’s children
According to Homosensual, more than 50 neighbors also showed their support for Julissa.
