According to The New York Times, this virus has spread in an unusual way this year. However, what is striking is that it has occurred among populations that had not previously been vulnerable. It is worrying that monkeypox has not received as much attention as Covid-19.

With his very particular style, Dr. Juan Rivera shared a video where he explains the four ways to distinguish monkeypox from chickenpox, since many believe that the lesions or vesicles left on the skin are practically the same. The health expert said the following:

“The vesicle that are produced by chickenpox have a more fragile wall and are not so attached to the skin. The vesicles that come out with monkeypox have a thicker, stronger wall and are more attached to your skin,» said the Univisión medical correspondent in this video.

Dr Juan Rivera revealed some other ways to distinguish this virus from chickenpox: “The vesicle that comes out with chickenpox breaks easily and that is not the case with monkeypox. The vesicles that come out with monkeypox can change over time, in fact they can develop like a ‘little hole’, like a crater in the middle, which doesn’t happen with chickenpox.”

“Finally, it can take up to four weeks for monkeypox vesicles to completely go away, whereas it’s usually less time with chickenpox. Remember, anyone can suffer from any of these diseases,” concluded the cardiologist.

At the end of last July, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the outbreak of monkeypox, which is spreading through more than 70 countries, constitutes an «extraordinary» situation that can now be described as a global emergency.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the decision to issue the statement despite a lack of consensus among members of the WHO emergency committee. It was the first time that the head of the UN health agency had taken such a step: “In short, we have an outbreak that has spread rapidly around the world through new modes of transmission that we know very little about and that meets the criteria of international health standards.”
