According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the tragedy occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

The CPD’s emergency number received a call at 3:00 PM requesting authorities’ assistance in front of an apartment building.

According to the call, shots were fired in front of 2300 West Jackson Boulevard, and a person was badly injured.

When CPD officers arrived at the scene, they found little Jai’mani Amir Rivera shot and lying on the sidewalk in front of the building.

The report from the first CPD officers on the scene details that Jai’mani Amir Rivera had a gunshot wound to the chest and was bleeding profusely.

One officer used first aid techniques to stem the bleeding, and another officer decided that the severity of the case did not warrant waiting for paramedics.

The CPD officers used their patrol car to urgently transport young Jai’mani Amir Rivera to Stroger Hospital to save his life.

However, once the boy Jai’mani Amir Rivera was in the emergency room, doctors could do nothing to help him, and he died from the gunshot.

The community demands justice from the authorities

Officers from the CPD’s Homicide Division went to the apartment building where the Hispanic boy was shot.

At the scene of the shooting, detectives found at least 11 casings from a gun that, according to forensic investigations, was a rifle.

The officers currently have no further clues about the perpetrators in the brutal shooting that killed Jai’mani Amir Rivera while he was visiting a friend.

On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, hundreds of people gathered at the site where the boy died demanding that the CPD solve the brutal crime.

Lucila Berrios, the aunt of the murdered boy, opened the Help Lay Jai’mani to Rest Peacefully account on the social network GoFundMe to ask for financial support for the funeral.

Berrios wrote her message asking for help in the first person, as if her nephew himself were speaking: «I was the most loving handsome boy,» the message says.

«Unfortunately, I will not make it to second grade. I will no longer be able to hug or tell my mother how much I love her. I won’t be able to grow up,» details the plea.

«My life was cut short due to gun violence, and it’s not fair,» concludes the plea written by Aunt Lucila Berrios asking for community support.

Firearm deaths continue to rise
