Ivette Diaz’s relationship ended in the worst imaginable way after her boyfriend discovered that she had put a bleach tablet in in his tea.
The disturbing story of attempted murder has caused a stir in Miami, Florida.
During a court appearance, Ivette Diaz insisted it was an accident.
A single sip of tea was enough for her boyfriend to realize something was wrong.
Ivette Diaz poisoned tea with bleach
After realizing there was something wrong with the tea, her boyfriend noticed traces of a bleach tablet, which is meant to be dissolved in five gallons of water, the arrest report details.
Police say that the poisoning occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20, in the house that the couple had rented for three months.
Diaz’s boyfriend made a meal of tortillas and tea, then walked outside to take a work call.
Authorities presume that’s when Ivette Diaz poisoned the tea.
How did he realize something was wrong?
When he came back, he offered her some of his tortilla to Diaz who commented that it was spicy.
Although he offered her his tea, she adamantly refused it — which later seemed suspicious.
Still, the man, whose identity has not been revealed by authorities, did not take any notice of it until he took his first sip of the drink.
The victim said as soon as he took a sip of his tea his throat began to burn and he noticed a strong smell of bleach.
How did he discover the bleach?
When he poured the cup out into the sink, he saw the remains of a bleach tablet.
Although Ivette’s boyfriend did not drink much of the poisoned tea, he called 911 for assistance.
Officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department and Fire Department responded to the home on the 28000 block of 158th Place southwest of Homestead.
Ivette Diaz was not arrested at that time.
Was Ivette simply confused about putting sugar in the tea?
It was not until the afternoon of Friday, February 23 that authorities arrested Diaz.
She was charged with poisoning food or water, a first-degree felony.
At the time of her arrest, Diaz refused to speak without the presence of a lawyer.
However, according to NBC News, her boyfriend told officers that when he asked her if she had put bleach in the tea, she simply replied, «I thought it was sugar.»
What’s next for Ivette Diaz?
Authorities pointed out that the couple had sugar in powder form kept in an upper cabinet.
«While concentrated chlorine in tablet form is kept under the kitchen sink,” according to police.
Needless to say, the couple broke up immediately. Ivette Diaz is being held without bail in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Her boyfriend has moved to another city.
