  • President-elect Donald Trump reacted to this agreement.
  • Here the details.

Israel and Hamas reached an agreement to end fighting in the Gaza Strip, marking a possible end to a 15-month conflict that has devastated the region.

The pact includes an exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners and has been the result of months of negotiations led by mediators from Egypt and Qatar, with backing from the United States.

The agreement, confirmed by sources cited by Reuters and the Axios portal, coincides with the imminent inauguration of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump.

Who will take office on January 20.

Israel and Hamas Reach Ceasefire Agreement in Gaza

In the first phase of the agreement, 33 hostages, including women, children and wounded people, will be progressively released over a period of 42 days during which a ceasefire in Gaza will be implemented.

At the same time, hundreds of Palestinian prisoners will be released, including some convicted of murder, although their final fate is not specified.

Additionally, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will begin a gradual withdrawal to a buffer zone near the border, maintaining some military presence until all hostages are freed.

The conflict has left a devastating toll: more than 46,000 dead in Gaza, according to figures from the local Ministry of Health, and thousands of displaced people surviving in precarious conditions.

Israel Ceasefire Agreement: International reactions and Trump’s role

President-elect Donald Trump celebrated the agreement on his social network Truth Social, taking credit for the understanding. This is what the media highlights Excelsior

«This historic agreement is a victory for the peace and security of our allies. «We have achieved a lot without being in the White House yet,» he said.

Trump stressed that his National Security team, led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, will continue to work with Israel and its allies to prevent Gaza from once again becoming a haven for terrorists.

He also promised to expand the Abraham Accords, ensuring that his future administration will bring «more victories for the United States and the world.»

Political and regional impact

In Israel, the release of the hostages could ease public pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Whose government faces criticism for security failures on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants stormed Israeli communities, causing more than 1,200 deaths and kidnapping 250 people.

However, far-right sectors in his cabinet have expressed their opposition to the agreement, threatening to leave the government.

The conflict has raised tensions across the region, with attacks by Iranian-backed groups from Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen in support of the Palestinians.

Israel escalated its military operations in response, eliminating senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in targeted strikes that altered the balance of the conflict.

An uncertain path to peace

Although the agreement represents significant progress, logistical and political challenges remain for its implementation.

Hamas’ demands and mutual mistrust between the sides could complicate compliance with the terms of the pact, while the ceasefire in Gaza offers a crucial respite for thousands of civilians caught up in the devastation of the conflict.

The future of this understanding will be key to defining the next steps in a conflict that has deeply marked the Middle East.
