  • Officials have added a new group of recipients who are eligible for inflation relief checks.
  • The inflation relief checks are different than other aid California has offered.
  • See if you qualify for this benefit!

If you live in the Golden State, this information is for you. Millions of Californians are eagerly awaiting their Middle Class Tax Refund — also referred to by lawmakers as an “inflation relief” payment or check — as the October disbursement dates approach, according to KTLA.

This isn’t the first time the state has issued direct payments to residents. As you may remember, the 2021 Golden State Stimulus program sent checks to millions of low- and middle-income Californians. But there are big differences between the Golden State stimulus check and the inflation relief check that is expected to be sent soon. This time, many more people qualify.

KTLA stated that an important change concerns Californians who rely exclusively on social security, disability or other sources of public assistance as a source of income. Under the Golden State Stimulus, people whose only source of income was public assistance were not eligible for a payment because their tax forms showed $0 California Adjusted Gross Income (CA AGI). Californians needed between $1 and $75,000 in income to qualify for that benefit.

However, with this year’s Middle Class Tax Refund, even people who reported $0 California Adjusted Gross Income on their 2020 taxes qualify for a payment. Payments range from $200 to $1,050, depending on your income, marital status and dependents, KTLA explained.

A person who relies solely on social security or disability for income, and therefore had CA AGI or $0 in 2020, will receive $350 if not claiming a dependent, or $700 if they have at least one dependent, according to the Bureau of Taxes.

A couple who files a joint return and relies solely on social security or disability will receive $700 without dependents or $1,050 with at least one dependent, the KTLA report published on Friday, August 26, indicated.

The Tax Office reminded Californians that there are other criteria people must meet to receive an inflation check, including residency requirements and tax deadlines. Overall, the state estimates that more than 23 million people will receive a payment, which will begin to be issued in October, the KTLA report concluded.

On the other hand, there are only a few weeks left to apply for help paying energy bills for the summer months. This is a $500 payment to eligible people. Mark Wolfe, executive director of the National Association of Energy Assistance Directors, which represents state administrators of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), intends to help people who have difficulties to cover their electric bills.

The LIHEAP program is funded by the federal government and provides energy credits and assistance to eligible families through payments worth up to $500. Thanks to the fact that the money is a grant, it does not have to be returned, the newspaper The Sun reported. The program provides states with earmarked funds for programs related to home energy bills, energy crises, weatherization, and some energy-related home repairs.

«If you’re having trouble paying that utility bill, feel free to reach out for assistance,» Wolfe told The Sun. This year, the program received $3.8 billion plus another $4.5 billion in stimulus funds to be awarded to people who qualify. However, that money ends on September 30 since the new fiscal year begins on October 1, 2022, which means that people who want to receive the help check for electric bills must hurry to request the additional financing.
