Hurricane Helene has strengthened to a Category 2 storm, with sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour.
The storm’s intensity is expected to increase as it heads toward Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Currently, the system is located 550 kilometers south of Tampa and 585 kilometers from Apalachicola.
This hurricane poses a threat with strong winds, storm surges, and flooding in the Florida peninsula.
NHC Urges Preparations as Hurricane Helene Threatens Florida
The NHC has urged residents to complete their preparations quickly to protect lives and property.
Helene could become a major hurricane, reaching Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
If it strikes Florida, it will be the fourth hurricane to hit the U.S. this year.
Previously, Beryl, Debby, and Francine have already impacted the country during this hurricane season.
The NOAA has forecasted an above-average season, with up to 13 hurricanes, including 4 to 7 major ones.
The Atlantic coast of Georgia and South Carolina is under a tropical storm watch.
